Two Words That Can Change Your Life

Chance/Change

When it comes to speaking to others, we usually stop to think about what we want to say. But, do you give yourself the same courtesy when you talk to yourself? We all fall victim to negative self-talk...and it can really hurt you in the long run.

There are two words that you need to start incorporating into your everyday language, both as you're talking out loud and especially in your inner monologue.  Any guesses what those 2 words are?

The first word I want you to embrace is a three-letter word. Yet. Any time you find yourself saying what you can't do, what you haven't done, or what you think you are not able to accomplish, add the word “yet” to the end of that thought.

How different do you feel if you say, “I can't run two miles” vs. “I can't run two miles YET?”

Adding that teeny tiny word to the end of those sentences helps inspire you to keep on moving forward, even when things feel hard, difficult, or uncertain.

Just this week I'm in the process of trying to learn a new piece of software and it hasn't been as easy as it usually is for me. Last night, I found myself having a conversation in my head. That little voice was saying, “You're never going to get this working.”  I started down the path of frustration and was about to give up.  But I stopped myself.  Instead, I said out loud, “I don’t have this working YET.” I then went a little further and said, “I know I will figure this thing out and I know I will get the pieces and parts working or I will find the right resource to help me do it.” That simple shift breathed new life and energy back to get the problem solved.

The second word (or words) is one that was taught to me by one of my amazing coaches, Mindi.

The power of saying “of course.”

For example, let’s say you have a financial goal for the month or earning $1,000. Instead of saying, “I need to make $1,000 in sales this month,” try saying, “Of course I’m going to make $1,000 in sales this month.”

It’s all about knowing and believing that you will accomplish what you set out to do. When you start bringing that subtle shift in mindset into your everyday life, it has a tremendous impact!

So, how do you apply this into your day-to-day life, especially as it relates to managing your time, staying organized, and being productive? If you are embracing some of the systems I teach in my TOP Program such as weekly planning and task-list management, it might work like this for you:

Instead of saying:

  • I don't know how to do weekly planning
  • I'll never figure out how to create my central task list

Say this instead:

  • I haven't mastered weekly planning yet
  • I haven't created my central task list yet

Or:

  • Of course, I'm going to learn how to better manage my time
  • Of course, I'm going to have more control over my calendar

Small, simple words but a huge impact!

If you have your own word or phrase that has helped you flip the story that you're telling yourself, I would love for you to share that as well. For more tips follow me on IG @megansumrell or check out my Pinterest @megansumrell1.
